An Earth day celebration in his childhood community motivated Wes Wilkins to grow into a passionate environmental activist, dedicated to Earth's wildlife. A resident of South Florida since 1981 and Picayune Strand State Forest since 1992, Wes has been highly interested in the interface between the desert of urban development and the natural world suffering from its unmitigated expansion. As an architect working in Florida for over 40 years, he is an advocate of thoughtful growth.
After becoming a Master Naturalist and expert in Florida land use, site development and plant design, Wes and his wife, Janneke, have dedicated themselves to build a more sustainable existence in the Forest, adapting to life with and for our natural neighbors. He has explored countless acres of South Florida's wild spaces, including but not limited to: Collier-Seminole State Park, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, Big Cypress National Wildlife Refuge, 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and Everglades National Park. These experiences include leading expeditions, camping, sailing, kayaking, bicycling and swamp hiking.
Meet Wes when you explore Snake Pit Camp and the Everglades Edge grounds, 24/7.
Ian has worked as a biologist in Southwest Florida since 2015. He is extensively trained and experienced with potentially dangerous wildlife, invasive species, and wildlife management. His passion for animal behavior and environmental education inspired him to join Wes in revitalizing the Picayune Nature Club. We are excited that he dedicated himself to our ecology despite the heat, biting insects, and humidity. Members and residents of southwest Florida enjoy his thought-provoking and informative educational programs.
Meet Ian as your enthusiastic guide on one of our Everglades Edge ecotour experiences.
We appreciate each and every member, so feel free to call anytime to just talk or set up a time to visit in person and get to know more about each other and Picayune Strand.
